ABOUT THIS SITE
What is a twitcher? Twitcher is a growing term for birdwatchers who travel to catch a glimpse of their favourite birds. Bird watching is probably as old as the written word! It takes no experience, virtually no investment but gives hours and even days of pleasure. You can start by looking out of you window!
Of my experience with bird watching I have realised that there are many websites, institutions and agencies out there that want you spot the birds and report your findings to them. I have not found one that provides all services that GBW provide. Some you can upload images. Some you can send observations. Others give you simple stats of number of counters and what was counted. We provide all this and much more.
The other thing I found strange was that bird watchers have got a pretty raw deal over the years. It seems all one way information. Of course, you can go and buy this information in books and magazines. At GBW we are going to try to gather all the usual birdwatching statistics and a lot more that will be deidcated to giving you, the birdwatcher, information back to enable you to find the best locations to spot birds, best feeds and feerder that particular birds enjoy.
As you are the bird watcher who reports the facts to us, we feel you should be at least able to have a special area where you can store and retrieve your sightings and pictures. GBW will build into a comprehensive database that you can run your own custom queries over as your sightings build over the years. You have the option of sharing and discussing this information with other like minded bird watchers. There is also an free forum where you can discuss topics with other GBW users and non GBW users.
Whether you are on a wind swept cliff top or in a comfortable room watching your birds through a window, bird watching is a pleasurable undertaking. But, you could enhance that pleasure by understanding the statistics this site produces. Are you fed up with all the crows and rooks in your garden? Look at the stats to see what other birdwatchers are attracting in their garden. Perhaps you need a few more bushes or samller feeders to attract the smaller and prettier birds. At GBW you can start your bird watching investigations and reap the rewards of preparing your bird area to your own preferences.
