MAIN GOALS OF THIS SITE

A Global Birdseye View!

I am ultimately aiming this site at a global audience. The ultimate aim is to create a global database of birdwatchers and twitchers who can quite comfortably interrogate the rich statistics of this site and quite confidently annouce they are off to a certain geographical region on the planet to see a certain bird. They can do this confidently because bird watchers around the world have added their sighting to this site. Of course, this in no way detracts from the fact that you can still compare the stats of your birds from the comfort of your armchair!

How does that work?

When you first login to GBW you are asked to setup your account. Part of this is telling the database your geographical region on the planet. This is done by country / region / town. Obviously we cannot list every town in the world but we can list all the larger towns in the region and provinces in each country. By doing this you can be assured that within a small region of a country you can start your expedition safe in the knowledge that within a few hundred square miles your prize sighting lurks!

You must be joking!

Well, ok, you would need to be a harden twitcher to travel to a town in the US to spot a bald eagle! But, what you can do in GBW is compare towns close by to you and see what birds they are attracting! Using the stats you can start to ask the questions, why 30 miles down the road they have more finches and tits, whilst you get rooks and ravens!

A long way to go!

This site is just getting started. To date I have only listed the geographical regions for the countries names in the 'online' lidst.. If you are from these countries you can start logging on and using the site right now. I will be adding new countries in the future but first I want to see if the site will be of benefit to bird watchers.

What about the rest of us?

Throughout 2010 I intended to introduce a multi-language site. This will primarily be aimed at French and Spanish speaking countries, with the far east coming online during 2011. Of course I have to get the geographical regions input first, so please bear with me. Oh, and if anyone want to offer their help with translations I certainly will not be saying no!
